Legacy Work

"Coral"*

This was another study. I guess this was also a sort of tribute to Brancusi.  I learned some things studying his work.  The first real show I was in also had a couple pieces by him.  I was just a teenager then, so I thought that was pretty cool.
Copper is an interesting medium.  Careful heating can produce irridescent colors.  Also, when copper melts it has a gleam or radiance that is unique and strangely beautiful.  I made "Coral" about the same time that I did the Chess Set.  The copper chess pieces were made the same way as "Coral".  I took strips of copper and melted/dripped and fused the drops with a torch.  It probably sounds simple, but copper doesn't behave very well.  It's a little frustrating and more than a little tedious.  Anyway, I built up and intertwined the branches of the coral.  Then after bringing out some colors and sealing the metal, I attached it to an oak base that I had turned on my Dad's lathe and lacquered.
