"Man's Nature - I"

(For an explanation of these works, click here.)
The following two photos show the piece "Man's Nature - I" well along in production.  The chain has not been added, yet, but the stone has been fitted to the frame and has been wrapped with a rubber sandblast mask to protect it from the sandblasting process as well as to keep paint off it.  The frame has had quite a lot of work done on it to achieve the desired finish.  Before beginning the finishing process, the whole frame was sandblasted to remove rust, weld scale etc.  Now the finishing work began:
First, a heavy coat of Black Enamel was brushed on and allowed to dry for a day or two.
Second, the paint was sandblasted away in some areas.
Third, acid was brushed on the frame.  This "aged" the paint and started corroding the bare metal areas.
Fourth, the acid was washed off and the frame was allowed to dry.
This whole process was repeated many times.  The paint was applied right over the rusted/corroded areas.  For a couple of sequences, green paint was used instead of black.

The following photo is a close-up showing one area of corrosion.  This particular spot is a focal point on the piece.  To emphasize the temporal nature of the Frame, the support bar was damaged to the point of failure and then had another piece "scabbed" on for strength.
